PITAK Newsletter – Jubilee Edition
In Preparation for the 40th Anniversary (2026)
“Forty Years of Life, Legacy, and the Unbroken Will to Hope”
Rene A. Atibagos
As the Kidney Transplant Association of the Philippines (KITAP) approaches its 40th year in 2026, I find myself looking back with both gratitude and quiet awe. This milestone is more than an anniversary—it is a gathering of stories, faces, and memories that remind us why KITAP came to life in the first place. It is a celebration rooted not only in success, but in the courage, pain, and resilience that so many Filipino families have carried with them through the journey of kidney transplantation.
Forty years ago, KITAP was born from the hopes of patients and families who longed for understanding and compassion during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. What started as a small group seeking comfort and connection slowly grew into a nationwide community—one that speaks loudly and stands firmly for the rights, dignity, and well-being of kidney transplant patients.
As we prepare for this Jubilee year, I cannot help but think of the countless stories that make up our shared history: the patient who waited with trembling hope for that life-changing call; the family who held on to faith even when fear felt overwhelming; the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who poured their skill and heart into every procedure; and the donors—our silent heroes—whose love, whether given in life or in passing, continues to save others. These stories are the pulse of KITAP. They are the reason we keep moving forward.
This moment of reflection also calls us to face the challenges that remain. Kidney disease continues to rise in our country. Many families still struggle with limited access to transplantation. Misconceptions about organ donation persist. But every challenge presents us with a chance—a chance to strengthen our advocacy, to raise our voices louder, and to remind every Filipino that dignity and hope should never be out of reach for any patient.
As we look ahead to our 40th year, KITAP renews its promise: that no patient will walk this journey alone; that every donor will be remembered with respect and gratitude; and that every transplant will be honored as a triumph of generosity, courage, and faith in life. We dream of a future where our community is not defined by illness, but by compassion and solidarity—where hope is always stronger than fear.
Forty years is a blessing. It is a testament to survival, service, and the unbreakable spirit that binds us all. As we step into this historic celebration, may we carry with us everything we have learned, and everything we still hope to achieve.
To the heroes, the healers, the donors, the survivors, and the families who continue to inspire us—this Jubilee belongs to you. As KITAP turns 40, may we continue to honor life, uplift each other, and celebrate the precious gift of second chances.
Mabuhay ang PITAK—forty years strong, and forever rooted in hope.
